When to use which

Pick the channel by the job

WhatsApp

Conversations and anything customers reply to: enquiries, order and payment updates, invoices, reminders, support, offers to opted-in customers.

SMS

A basic fallback that reaches every phone — short alerts and OTPs when the customer may not be on WhatsApp.

RCS

Rich, branded messages in the phone's own messages app — worth testing as coverage grows, usually with SMS fallback.

Email

Long content: newsletters, detailed statements, contracts and anything customers file away.

Why many Indian businesses start with WhatsApp

  • Customers already use it every day, and they can reply — so a reminder turns into a conversation, and a conversation into an order.
  • No DLT registration. WhatsApp has its own approval: Meta verifies your business and reviews each template. (You still need DLT if you also send SMS.)
  • Rich messages: invoice PDFs, product photos, buttons like *Pay now* or *Track order*, and forms inside the chat.
  • One inbox for the team: sales, support and accounts reply from the same business number.
  • Clear costs: Meta's per-message rate by category — and replies inside the 24-hour window are free. Work out your cost →

Using them together

Most businesses don't pick just one. A common mix: WhatsApp for conversations and updates, SMS as a fallback for people not on WhatsApp, email for long documents. Lead Pattern handles the WhatsApp part — templates, broadcasts, chatbots and the team inbox — and connects to your systems through the API and webhooks.

WhatsApp vs SMS vs RCS FAQ

Is WhatsApp better than SMS for business?+

For anything customers might reply to, or that needs images, PDFs or buttons, WhatsApp usually works better. SMS still reaches every phone, so many businesses keep it as a fallback.

Do I need DLT registration for WhatsApp messages?+

No. DLT registration is for SMS (and RCS business messages) in India. WhatsApp has its own process: Meta business verification and template approval.

What is RCS messaging?+

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the upgraded version of SMS: branded messages with images and buttons in the phone's own messages app. In India it works on Android phones with Google Messages, and iPhone support started on Jio in September 2026; phones without RCS need an SMS fallback.

Is RCS going to replace WhatsApp?+

They do different jobs. RCS upgrades the messages app; WhatsApp is where most Indian customers already chat with businesses and reply. Many businesses will use both.

Which is cheaper, WhatsApp or SMS?+

It depends on your SMS provider's rate. WhatsApp's charge is Meta's rate by category — about ₹0.115 for utility and ₹0.86 for marketing in India (excluding GST), with free replies inside the 24-hour window. Compare with your SMS provider's quote for the same volume.

Can I send OTPs on WhatsApp instead of SMS?+

Yes — with authentication templates, sent from your system through the API. Many businesses keep SMS as a backup for users not on WhatsApp.
