What each number means
| Count | What it means | |---|---| | Sent | Lead Pattern handed the message to WhatsApp | | Delivered | WhatsApp confirmed it reached the customer's phone | | Read | The customer opened it (only when their read receipts are on) | | Failed | It couldn't be sent or delivered — with a reason code |
Delivered is part of sent, and read is part of delivered — the numbers narrow as they go.
Why "read" looks low
People who switch off read receipts in WhatsApp's privacy settings don't send read receipts, so their opens never count as read. Judge reach by delivered and problems by failed.
Common reasons for failures
- An invalid or missing phone number in your list.
- A template problem — check its status. Template errors →
- Your daily messaging limit on a big send. Messaging limits explained →
Look up any code in our list of WhatsApp error codes. Customers who opted out are left out before sending, so they never show as failures.
